Resealing

Q: Is it necessary to reseal my concrete driveway, patio and walkways each year?

Darrick: Sealing your concrete is a protection of the initial investment you made in your property. Sealing your concrete is like waxing your car or wearing sunscreen. It improves the concrete’s appearance by bringing out the colour, prevents fading caused by UV rays and protects it from stains and harmful chemicals caused by chlorine, salt, leaves, dirt, fertilizer and even pet and neighbourhood wildlife urine. Living in our cold Canadian winters is another reason to reseal your concrete as it helps to reduce the chance of freeze thaw damage. Cracks and surface flaking can occur when water penetrates the unsealed concrete surface and then expands as it freezes. A sealer will bead up the water instead.

We generally recommend resealing your concrete landscaping at the start of each season to preserve and freshen the concrete’s appearance. There are many different gloss levels available, from no-gloss to high-gloss. A tinted sealer can be used to enhance your concrete’s colour. A sealer also helps to prevent efflorescence, a white powdery built up on the surface of the concrete. There are also slip resistant sealers available that can be great for around a pool, on steps and especially where children and older adults may be living.
